Stay active:
Exercise is key for staying healthy and fit, even as we age. Staying active also helps to keep your mind sharp and can help to keep your skin looking young. Being active doesn't mean running 5 miles a day. A short brisk walk around the neighborhood, participate in an online yoga class. I love free classes on YouTube. My favorite yoga YouTube Channel is Yoga with Adriene. It is beginner friendly and body inclusive, both pluses for me. The key is to keep your body young by moving it. You have to keep those joints lubricated!
Embrace your gray hair:
Don't fight your gray hair; embrace it! It's a sign of wisdom that you've earned with age. Consider trying different styles and hair care products to make your gray look its best, and whatever you do, don't pluck them. If gray hair isn't your thing, by all means please go ahead and dye your hair. Perhaps this may be a time to go bold and take a risk! They do say that blonde's have more fun. The point is, graying hair is part of your body's growth and journey. Don't hate your hair because of it.
Take care of your skin:
With age comes more sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to wear sunscreen and moisturize regularly. I have to say, this has been the best piece of advice I got from my mom. Although we had modest means, my mother really enjoyed taking care of her skin. She invested in her skin and treated herself to luxury skincare. At 71 her skin looks amazing.
Invest in a good skin care routine to keep your skin looking healthy and young. Skincare doesn't have to be expensive. I use many drugstore and bargain brands to keep me skin healthy and looking young.
Eat healthy:
Eating a balanced diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, and proteins can help to keep your body healthy and strong. I'm guilty of not always consuming food that nurtures my body. In my 40's I've come to regret some of my food choices. I am not suggesting a diet! If anything, on my journey, I've learned that depriving myself of the foods I want only makes me want to crave them more. I truly believe that we need to listen to what feels good to our bodies and eat more of that. Ladies, I know that chocolate tastes good but too much of a good thing can hurt our bodies. Remember, that our bodies are our temples.
Stay social:
Connecting with friends and family is important for our emotional and mental health. Spend time with the people you love and make sure to stay involved in activities that bring you joy. Set up a monthly girls night in with your girlfriends. Or perhaps it is Sunday dinner with your loved ones. Do you like to dance?, maybe a Salsa social is in your future. Whatever it is, make it a point to meet up and gather with folks that will lift your spirits. Loneliness has serious health impacts on all human beings.
